Despite incredible progress in preventing child death, one million children still take their first and last breath on the day they are born. Money for foreign assistance programs—including for maternal and child health programs, have directly translated to lives saved over the past 25 years. Since 1990, with the help of U.S. foreign assistance, the world has cut the number of children who die before their 5th birthday by more than half, saving the lives of an estimated 100 million children since the year 2000. Today, 18,000 more children and 650 more mothers will survive than the same day in 1990. To protect this progress and preserve these programs from any disproportionate cuts, we are asking you to take action this week.

Act Now

Why this week?

A group in the House of Representatives has come together and written a letter, to ask for robust funding for the Maternal and Child Health Account, including funds for vaccines and nutrition. This letter will be addressed to appropriators who are beginning to make decisions on how to allocate the budget for FY19. Last year 146 members of Congress added their name to this letter and this year, we would like your member to be one of them. The deadline for Representatives to sign is March 12.

The death of any child is heartbreaking, even more so when you know that the death was preventable. Around the world, more than 15,000 mothers a day experience this heartbreak; for nearly half it is within the first month of their child being born. This is in addition to the 2.6 million mothers who live through the grief of having a stillborn baby. The only acceptable numbers are zero.

To reach this number of zero preventable child deaths, and to ensure every mother survives pregnancy, Congress needs to hear from you. Last year one-third of Congress signed this letter! This is significant in a political environment that can be polarizing. It is because of advocates that Representatives are reaching across the aisle to be one voice for healthy moms and babies.

This bipartisan letter to support continued funding for maternal and child health programs is led by Congressman David Reichert (WA) and Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN), with support from Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA), Congressman Michael McCaul (TX), Congressman Dennis Ross (FL), Congressman Dan Donovan (NY), and Congressman Ami Bera (CA). Make a phone call or send an email below and encourage your Representative to join this group – with your action we can increase the number of signers for FY19!
